I began painting The General in 2023, during the war that began on October 7, 2023, and completed it in 2024. At a time when the feeling of safety became uncertain, I wanted to create someone who could give me a sense of protection. A man whose presence alone would make me feel that everything was going to be alright, that someone was there to make sure I was safe, even within my own home.

The General represents confidence, authority, and quiet power. He is a man who has lived through life, gathered wisdom, and knows what needs to be done. Successful and commanding, yet modern in his thinking, he embodies the reassuring presence of someone you can trust.

I chose to paint only his head because I wanted the viewer to focus entirely on his face. To me, it is remarkable how much emotion and meaning can be conveyed through such a small part of a person. His black and white features evoke the feeling of a man from another era, someone experienced, educated, and dependable.

The vivid red background reinforces his strength and dominance, while the blue details and black lines introduce my own fascination with modern and abstract art. Together, these elements create a contrast between tradition and contemporary expression, vulnerability and strength, fear and reassurance.

Ultimately, The General is my attempt to create a feeling rather than simply a portrait.
The feeling that when he is around, everything will be alright.
