This is my favorite painting I have ever created. The moment I first saw Jan van Eyck’s portrait, I felt an immediate connection to him. There was something about his expression that felt both gentle and confident, a quiet strength that I recognize in myself as a woman today. I knew I wanted to paint him, not simply to recreate his image, but to bring him into my world and explore what I felt when I looked at him.

I wanted to bring this historical portrait into the modern world through my own eyes, techniques, and artistic language, giving it a new life without losing the character that drew me to it in the first place.

Red has always been a color I feel deeply connected to, and I wanted it to take center stage. The bold red headwear became a statement of confidence, identity, and self expression. For me, it represents the courage to embrace who I am and let my work speak for itself, without needing to explain it.

After one year and three months of working on this painting, it became much more than my interpretation of an iconic artist. It became a personal connection between his image and my own identity, a way of honoring the feeling that first drew me to him while allowing myself to express it entirely in my own way.
